Lauren Cane Bassoon Reed
Medium
Item number 2140008DM, $8.90
Medium Hard
Item number 2140015DM, $8.90

These Lauren Brand bassoon reeds are consistent and inexpensive. Lauren makes a nice reed that is ideal for the younger bassoonist.

General information on bassoon reeds: Bassoon reeds are typically available made of wood or plastic. Usually the wood reeds are made of 'cane', a natural material similar in structure to bamboo. We almost always recommend cane reeds over plastic reeds, since they sound a lot better, and are usually a lot more manageable. Plastic reeds cost more, but will last a lot longer (months instead of weeks). We find it difficult to get a good sound on a bassoon using a plastic reed.

Cane reeds are available in different 'strengths'. The most popular strength is medium, followed by medium soft and by medium hard. Some manufacturers only make 1 or 2 strengths of bassoon reed, but we carry all available varieties from each of the manufacturers we represent.

If your bassoon teacher or band director recommends a specific reed, try to stick to the recommendation. There is a lot of variation between brands, and trusting the teacher's expertise is a good idea when it comes to reed selection. If you don't have a specific recommendation to work with, we suggest you try 1 each of several different brands, and choose the one that has the best sound for you and your bassoon. We usually recommend the 'medium' strength for customers that don't already have a preference, although 'medium soft' might be more appropriate for beginning bassoonists.

Korg Chromatic Tuner
Korg Chromatic Tuner
Item number 2630177DM, $23.95

We've used Korg tuners since the mid-80s, and have never found a better brand. Korg brand tuners keep getting smaller, cheaper, and more accurate. We recommend this model as a great "travel-size" tuner. It will fit in most cases (it measures 2 1/2 by 4 inches, and is about 1/2 inch thick), and runs on two AAA batteries, which are included with your tuner purchase.

A built-in microphone makes for easy use with acoustic instruments, and a 1/4" input jack is great for use with guitars and basses. A unique feature to this model of tuner is the "calibrate" feature. This tuner defaults to "A-440", but can be adjusted to anywhere from A-410 to A-480. You can play any of the 12 pitches, and use your ear to match. This feature is ideal for intermediate and advanced players, as it provides an even more accurate method of tuning than the electronic display.

In all, we love the Korg tuners, and specifically think this model is a great deal for the money. Try it!

An external microphone makes it easy to tune in noisy environments - even when other people are playing around you. Just clip the microphone onto your instrument and plug it into the input jack on the tuner.
